The Little House That Just Won’t Sell

by Miss Charlotte on April 9, 2013

Once upon a time,

Karin Elizabeth Fotografie

Quite a long time ago, way back when….waaaaaay back….yours truly put her Little House on the market so she could ready herself for an adventure with The Woodsman, the Three Kiddos, and the Moose.  I was sure it would be snatched up quickly by some eager buyer who wanted to live a cozy life up on a little hill, just outside of the city limits.  With its shiny new kitchen, it’s amazing two-stall, two-story garage, and it’s pretty little rooms all ready to show, it was sure to sell in an instant.    Well, mes amis, I am here to tell you that my thoughts on the matter could not be further from the reality of it all.  This quaint Little House on this adorable little hill has had well over 15 months, 40+ showings, and at least 6 interested parties that could have been “the one,” and yet… not a single offer.  Le sigh.

I’ve tried all the tricks to stay sane.

There were days when visiting local art museums and artist’s hangouts were needed to keep from missing my things.  Other days, when a buyer needed to come pay a visit and meander through the Little House, we spent time at new found parks and had mini adventures along the way.  I’ve even gone so far as to bake millions of breads, muffins, cookies, and scones to give the Little House that warm and homey feeling.  Alas, it is to no avail.  My patience has thinned, the market is quirky, and I have started unpacking a box here and there (specifically for my ramekins).  We’ve had our share of mishaps and mayhem, we’ve even considered charging admission to pay for our inconvenienced life.  We’ve tried it all, and still we wait.

There is no question about it, The Little House is adored!

Prospective buyers have “oooo’d” and “aaaah’d.”  Practically all of them have said that the house “shows well”, “we loved the house”, “what’s not to love?!”  Time still ticks on, and the Little House still waits for a sale.  We have had some very close calls, though.  Six that I can recall, and none of them had the same reason for not buying.

Our first potential buyer adored the house, everything about it was just right.  From the geographical position to the gardening possibilities, the “Feng Shui” couple loved it all…except for the front door.  It didn’t have a proper path leading to the door, therefore, it may not work for the main entry.  After waiting several weeks to hear from family overseas with regards to this issue, they determined that, because of their family’s lack of response, it wouldn’t be a good buy.

Our next potential, the “HVAC’S,”  scheduled 3 separate showings, loved everything!  Everything except the HVAC unit out back.  They determined that it wouldn’t be possible to move the unit (let’s just make this clear, being married to The Woodsman has made me certain that absolutely nothing is impossible in construction….nothing), therefore, the deck they wanted to build wouldn’t be built and the Little House was no longer an option.

Next, we have the “Probablies,” who loved the house and everything about it and we should “probably expect an offer by the end of the week.”  I’m wondering which week they were referring to, because it’s been a few months.

Roger J Porter

A short while later, “Garage Guy” showed up early for his showing, leaving us no choice but to remain close to the house while he meandered around the property, specifically…the garage.  He LOVED the garage, it was perfect for his needs.  Oh, and the house was nice, too.  He wasn’t overly concerned about the house.  Unfortunately, his financing ran into a road block and he couldn’t give us an offer until this coming June. (He may very well still be “The One” if this nonsensical real estate market doesn’t produce a buyer!)

Our next contestants, The Retired Couple, loved the kitchen, the dining room, the entire home.  All they needed was to sell their house, and they would be buying our Little House.  Apparently, they’re having the same luck we are having.

And most recently, we had an adorable older couple drive up the hill and tell me their life story in a span of 10 minutes only to return the following day for a showing.  Again with the love, the “it’s perfect” and “I love it”…alas, The “I’m Not the Money, She Is” did not have the money and are supposedly trying to get it.

Le sigh.

Giving up is not an option.

Blanket fort

As much as I would love to just throw up our hands, crack open a bottle of Rooster, pack up all of our things and head out the door, leaving the Little House to just sit here…all alone…as much as that thought has crossed my mind, I can’t just walk away.  I desperately want to move forward with our lives, with our adventures.  I dream of the day when we wave goodbye to everyone as we drive into the sunset.  Until that day when the papers are signed, we are going to have to keep our chins up, always tidy up, and never stop hoping that it will sell.  If you see me hiding in blanket forts, refusing to come out ever again, just wave a few chocolate treats and a nice glass of Cabernet in the doorway….I’m pretty sure I’ll resurface for that.  Cheers!

Miss Charlotte’s Tips For Living Out of Boxes

Most of our “life” is packed up and pile high. All the material possessions that we hold dear, all the books that we treasure (except for the Woodsman’s books, I couldn’t imagine how stir crazy he would be without his Ashley Book of Knots, Modern Welding, Layout For Boiler Makers, and many other worthy titles), [...]

Finding Ourselves…Elsewhere

July 26, 2012

Adventure and wonder can be found just about anywhere.   There is something quite unique and extraordinary about found objects, curiosities, textiles, and old books….especially if they’re all found in one very fantastical place tucked away in a very old, nearly forgotten building.  I can’t even begin to tell you how much my face hurts [...]
